Adult Education: Sundays and During the Week
Join a Sunday School class this fall and discover a way of deepening your faith while defining relationships. Contact Canon John Mark Wiggers, 404-365-1105, or Amanda Stephenson, 404-365-1080 if you have questions about Adult Education. An array of Adult Christian Education classes, taught by Cathedral clergy, staff, lay members, and guests from the community, are offered from 10:10–11:05 a.m. on Sunday mornings.
Beginning August 24
The Dean’s Forum— Faith and Knowledge (Child Hall)
The Fall starts another school year, and it starts another year of Christian education programs in the church. What is the proper relationship of faith and knowledge? How should our Christian faith affect our use of the intellect and reason? Is faith opposed to reason? Join Dean Sam Candler as he begins another season of “The Dean’s Forum” on Sunday mornings at 10:10.
Old Fashioned Sunday School (Room 382)
Good friends and good coffee provide the setting for discussion of matters of faith and daily life. The topics vary each week as guest speakers provide the theme. Canon George Maxwell coordinates this class. This Sunday The Very Reverend Harry H. Pritchett, Jr. will lead a discussion on the question “Why Do We Believe What We Believe?”
Faith and Literature (Room 370)
In this class we will read and discuss short stories by some of the world’s best authors as they write about experiences of faith, spirituality and religion. Join us as we explore these experiences through the works of authors such as Flannery O’Connor, Louise Erdrich, John Updike, Tobias Wolff and others. Each week our discussions will center around a short story from the collection, God Stories, edited by C. Michael Curtis. This book can be purchased in the Cathedral Bookstore. Join us for the year or drop in on a particular story of interest. Each class stands on its own. All are welcome! The class is facilitated by Ward Bondurant.
Amos and Hosea (Room 380)
Join us for an in-depth look at these two prophets and the Old Testament books named for them. The class will be facilitated by Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis.
Introduction to the Old Testament (Room 368)
This year we will begin a new series of classes that will explore the basic tenets of our Christian faith. An Introduction to the Old Testament class will begin in the fall, and an Introduction to the New Testament class will begin in the spring. Both of these classes will be designed to give an overview of our Scriptures, focusing on key people, events, and themes. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Bible!
Beginning August 31
Elders Ministry: The Gift of Years (Room 366)
All are invited to join this class based on Joan Chittister’s book The Gift of Years: Growing Older Gracefully, which encourages us to cherish the dimensions of aging and overcome its challenges. Class begins on August 31 and continues for three more Sundays. Contact Canon Carolynne Williams at 404-365-1035 with any questions.
Beginning September 7
Adult Confirmation Class (Room 381)
Canon John Mark Wiggers teaches this class for adults who wish to be baptized, confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church. This also is a great “refresher” course for current members. This class begins September 7 and culminates in a Diocesan confirmation service.
